As you slowly nurse through the margarita in your hand and lay eyes on the enchanting natural beauty of the oceanic landscape, it is hard not to fall in love with this charming town of Cabo San Lucas. Cabo (as the locals affectionately call it) is a small city at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. Adulated for its pristine beaches and bustling night life,Cabo has been touted as a high-end vacation destination that is growing in international stature.
The first thing on the itinerary when you arrive in Cabo has got to be a visit to Land's End. Awaiting you is El Arco, a famous arc-shaped granite formation that is partially covered by the waters at high tide. Few places can match the grandeur of the arc, especially during sunset and sunrise. As the locals aptly put it: You haven't done Cabo until you've done El Arco! Hire a water taxi for a few dollars to quiet Lover's Beach or Playa del Amor. Unlike the Playa Medano, this beach is not swamped by vendors hawking local wares. It would be an ideal place to just lie on the white sand and admire the spectacular scenery. However, swimming and snorkeling should be avoided due to the notoriously rough currents up against the rock formations.
If you are visiting Cabo in the months from January through March, treat yourself to a whale watching tour operated by Aereo Calafia. For around 40 USD, you will get to see the magnificent migratory creatures frolicking in the waters off Cabo.
If you don't fancy getting your feet wet, you can sign up for the helicopter tours provided by CaboRey. For this unique 12-minute sightseeing experience, the flight will take you to see EL Arco, Playa del Amor, Playa Medano and areas where parts of Troy were filmed. Helicopters depart daily from the Cabo San Lucas Airport. It is priced at 95 USD per passenger.
There is no better way to immerse oneself into the vibrant culture of Mexico than to witness the sights and sounds of the Fiesta de Cabo San Lucas on October 18th at the Marina Boulevard. It is an annual festival that celebrates the patron saint of Cabo San Lucas. Streets are closed and a parade passes through the center of the town. Apart from the music and dancing, prepare to savour the diverse culinary delights on offer. This festival is an experience that is definitely worth planning your vacation period to coincide with.
Sample Cabo Wabo-brand Tequila when you get down to Cabo Wabo Cantina, one of the most popular nightspots in Cabo. It is owned by Van Halen's Sammy Hagar, who plays there live every October 13th, his birthday.
If you are looking for a place to relax after all the late-night partying, head to the town square named Parque Amelia Wilkes. In this favorite park of the locals, there are plenty of benches and a huge gazebo (a pavilion structure of sorts) for tourists to rest their tired legs and just take in the sights.
To fully explore Cabo, renting a car is highly recommended, especially if you are traveling with a group of friends. On the average, small car rentals cost from 60-80 USD. Some of the available agencies are National, Budget, Alamo and Dollar.
