To learn piano chords by ear rather than instruction is by far the best way to play! There is only one catch! You must have an ear that can hear music and remember the sound of the melody. This is what I call the "beginning" of conquering the 88 keys!
Remembering the melody of a favorite song and sitting down in front of the piano , trying to figure out the individual notes is the road that will lead to creating chords. Myself , and many other musicians started with the "one note" at a time , recreating the melody . If you can play the melody one note at a time , which matches the song , then you have an ear for music ! Yeah! Now , once you figure out the melody and you can remember the sequence of notes which does take some time and a lot of practice , you are on your way! I started playing piano at age 10 at my fathers bar. No one ever touched that old piano and it took a lot of courage to sit down and think of what favorite song of mine I would like to play. Figuring it out by trial and error I was now hooked. After the first success of playing single note melody , almost exactly as the song , is such a feeling of accomplishment that is so great and realizing that you have an "ear" , that you might even be gifted , sends you down the road of a life long ambition to play every single song that you ever heard and liked!
I don't care what the "trained" piano player says about how good he or she might be , because they were taught by someone and brag that they can read music.I think it is mostly "rote" especially for someone who has no "ear". Take away the sheet music and the teacher and I'm betting that some , maybe a lot of piano players couldn't figure out "Jingle Bells" .They need to read the notes and chords to play. Self taught is so much more of an accomplishment and I mean no disrespect to the "trained" piano players. Learning how to play on your own provides unlimited adventures because all you need is the piano , your ear , and your love of music to get better and better. It becomes more of a passion when you have figured out songs on your own and it grows and grows until.....CHORDS! That is the greatest leap a self taught player makes. In my case the first chord I played was a "C" but I didn't know it was a "C" chord. It sounded like that was the starting point of all chords!
In my case , I was really into Rock at 10 years old in 1966. All I wanted to do was figure out songs on my own. I didn't want sheet music , or a teacher. No , to me that would
