Memoirs: A kiss

Hand in hand we walked out to his car. I could feel the soft breeze rush through my silk blouse. The pavement was still wet; damp from the evening rain. My bare toes - numb in the cool October air. It was our third date. I didn't want him to leave. There was something different about him. The quiet, gentle manner - so different from the overbearing intellects of my past. He was boy-like in his endeavor - innocent.

Soft spoken words of when the next time we would see each other were said. Warm embraces. Our third date, I had to wonder, would this be the night? Anticipation filled my soul, I could feel the excitement throughout my body - no matter that it was cold and I was barefoot at midnight. The night needed to go on.

But it was late, he had an hour's drive home, work and school the next day. Gently he leans toward me. I feel the thumping in my chest. Thump, Thump, Thump. On my toes I feel the closeness as we brush each others lips. Soft. Short. Beautiful.

Should I say it? My heart knew. I could not keep it in any longer. I hadn't said it to anyone else. I nervously leaned into our embrace. "I love you."

I feel the clutch tighten, it was right to say it; it wasn't a mistake. Only our third date! Softly, I hear, "You're Awesome!"
