Disagreeing with company policies: Should you voice concerns or not?

I think there is a time and a place to voice concerns about companies policies, but you also have to understand that you can't always have it your way. Company policies are generally created with the interest of the business and the employees at heart. Unfortunately they also take into account the law. The business and legal aspect of these policies are what can sometimes cause policies to be unfavorable.

Also, you have to understand that the policies are made to apply to the whole population. Many times employees may need exceptions, which sometimes are granted, but on the whole the company has past presedence that it must recognize when applying these policies to ensure what you get is what Joe got last month.

Most companies have forums or ombuds lines or HR representatives that you can use as avenues to express concerns about these policies. Sometimes, however, you may not be able to make a change. At that point you need to make the decision as an employee what matters to you. If the policy that you are concerned about is so important to you or against your values, then it may be time to consider if perhaps this job is not for you.

If the issue is something you can live with, I recommend using the proper channels to express your concerns, but move along once you have tried everything you can.
