There a are a few simple things you should do before your next ski trip to ensure you have the best trip possible.
1. Take a virtual tour of the resorts you are considering. Most resorts offer everything from live web cams of the ski runs and the village, to detailed statistics of the weather and snow conditions. It is really easy to make sure the terrain and the overall style of the resort suits your group.
2. Book all your equipment rentals ahead of your arrival. If you need skis or boots don't leave it until you get there. Check the Internet and book early. You will probably benefit from an early bird booking discount and have a better selection. It will save you time when you arrive and avoid any chance of disappointment if your size isn't available immediately.
3. Buy your lift tickets as soon as possible. Many resorts offer discounts for on-line booking. You may even be able to have them delivered straight to your home address ahead of your departure so you can skip those tedious lines.
4. Book your lessons before you travel. This is a particularly good idea if you are traveling with kids or novice skiers. Ski School fills up quickly in most resorts so, to avoid disappointment book early.
5. Investigate excursions. Most resorts have a lot more to offer than just skiing. If your party has non-skiers or fair weather skiers you may need a back up plan, or even to book some excursions. How about snowmobiling, dog sledding or snow shoe trekking?
6. Arrange your transportation. If you are confident driving along the mountain roads, no matter the conditions, then go ahead and book a rental car. Consider selecting a four-wheel drive vehicle and make sure there will be sufficient luggage room. If however, you are not comfortable driving in winter conditions or your group is just too big, book seats on one of the many resort shuttle services available. It is particularly great if you have had a long flight and know you will be arriving at the airport tired. Transatlantic flights can be exhausting, and driving unfamiliar routes through winter driving conditions when you are already exhausted is a recipe for disaster.
7. Check out the transportation in the town on line. Most resorts offer a subsidized or free trolley or shuttle service between the ski hills and the accommodation and restaurants. Familiarize yourself with the routes and schedules. Find out if there are any spots along the route that are prone to problems or times of the day when you should avoid them.
If you take a little extra time when you are planning and booking your next ski trip, by the time you reach the resort all you will have left to do is Ski!
