The first mistake to avoid is not golfing with your kids. Exposure is fundamental. Preconceived notions about whether it's a fun or exhilirating game will quickly be replaced by real experience.
Then you have to see if your kids are really enjoying it before encouraging them any further, for example by getting them time with professional instructors. Be forewarned that facilities for junior golfers are not numerous.
To begin with get them used to going for a day out, and be carefree and uncompetitive and let them drink in the sights and sounds and sheer pleasure and luxury of messing about on beautiful lawns for hours. The more they play the more they will naturally feel the competitive urge, the more they will start to respect the game itself and will play with a view to doing well.
Even then, you cannot expect them to take it to the next level all by themselves. Once their passion has been established it you should develop it. For all you know they may turn professional one day.
Developing their passion through instruction and programmes is becoming an increasingly popular way to get young people interested in golf, but you can also get them interested by encouraging them to watch a PGA or LPGA event live or nscreen.
When looking for the right kind of instructor for your kids, be discerning about experience, qualifications, expertise, background and availability. Also ensure your kids have adequate equipment, and don't be a miser - get a golf net so they can play at home.
