As a parent, one of the most important parts of our job is keeping our children healthy. Even when they are away at school, it Creating a healthy and nutritious lunch for your child can be fun, healthy, and exciting for your child, and easy for you. Although at times it may seem easier to just put unhealthy foods into that little box, it is important that not only the child approves, but you can feel confident that your child is continuing a healthy diet while in school. Here are some ideas to help create a enjoyable healthy lunch, that your child will actually be happy to eat.
HELP YOUR CHILD LEARN HEALTHY FOOD HABITS
As parents, it is important that we teach our kids all the right choices in life, and it is important to teach health and proper nutrition. It is also important that we try and maintain a healthy diet for our children even when they are away from home. Some children will trade their lunches once at school, so it may help to get your child involved in choosing items for his or her lunch box that they will be happy to enjoy. Some ideas for this, include taking your child grocery shopping with you. Explain the need for a healthy meal, and the importance of a appropriate lunch that is healthy and will keep them full until after school is finished.
INCLUDE ALL FOOD GROUPS
It is essential for a healthy diet, to include all the food groups into their lunch. Try to create different variations of these foods, as it can be easy for a child to get tired of them same thing day after day. Some kids will actually enjoy taking leftovers from last nights dinner. Explain the necessary food groups, and allow your child to find suitable choices for each food group.
ADD A LITTLE FUN TO THE LUNCH BOX
Young children in elementary grades will love little notes or surprises in their lunch boxes. This can also provide a little special pick-me-up in the middle of the day. You can also shape pieces of fruit or sandwiches into little shapes or characters. Adding a little treat to the lunch can make a boring lunch more enjoyable, but remember to keep it healthy and nutritious. Bake a favorite cookie or muffin, or add a milk shake or fruit smoothie for a drink.
HEALTHY VERSES UNHEALTHY CHOICES
Here are a few healthy variations of normally unhealthy lunch box treats and foods;
*Slice your own meat, cheese, and buy whole grain crackers instead of buying packaged, that comes with preservatives and added unnecessary ingredients.
*Fresh, unpeeled fruit, that is naturally packed with nutrients and vitamins, instead of cookies or other similar treats. Fruit packed muffins can also be an enjoyable alternative.
*Try multi-grain, wholewheat, or nutrient enriched white bread instead of plain white bread for sandwiches. You can also try making bagel sandwiches for a change every now and then.
*If your child enjoys cookies or treats in their lunch, if you have time, try baking your own, and finding healthy, enjoyable alternatives to unhealthy ingredients.
So get your child excited about lunch, and help them feel happy and healthy while allowing them to add their own input, and choices. You will feel better knowing what your child is eating, and they will feel better about what they eat. You will never have to worry about them not eating or trading their lunch again.
