Why some people are afraid of dying, and some aren't

Aside from the physical pain that may precede death or the sorrow for the relationships or projects one must leave behind, there is nothing to fear about death. It is simply the end of life.

Fear has instrumental value when it helps us avoid harmful things. As it is neither possible nor desirable to avoid death, there is no good reason to fear it. Our bodies and minds are not designed to last forever and must eventually run out.

Death is rearrangement, like a wave folding back into the ocean from where emerges another wave. We might say that the Earth expresses itself consciously and perpetually reconfigures its conscious bodies. Death is not an irrevocable loss for those who perceive themselves as part of a changing Earth. As consciousness dims in the part of the Earth that was our dying bodies, new consciousness will rise in the recycled matter that becomes new bodies.
