A low carb diet is not a long-term health solution. Generally, low carb diets tend to be higher in fat and animal protein. This means a low carb diet is also higher in cholesterol - not a good combination for optimum health. Not only are we not meant to live a low carb lifestyle because of the cholesterol factor, but a low carb diet is deficient in vitamins and minerals necessary for good health and longevity.
Carbohydrates are essential nutrition for humans. To doubt this, one need only look at a nursing baby's ideal food for the first six months of life. Certainly, it includes animal source protein, but it also includes milk sugar, a carbohydrate.
What is missing from a diet low in carbohydrates is a host of vitamins and minerals. So why then, do people go low carb? People go low carb for weight loss and because of elevated blood triglycerides. However, there is an alternative. If all flour products are eliminated and fruits are limited to a few servings per day, an individual would still have the benefit of carbohydrates in the diet, but with better blood glucose control and a lower triglyceride level.
A moderate approach to diet is always best. As with all things a life, balance seems to be the ticket. A sensible diet based on sound nutritional principles is one that also includes complex carbohydrates, common whole grain starches, fresh fruit, and vegetables. Protein and fat alone, were not meant to feed the brain or the soul. Our bodies need carbohydrates, and getting the right type and amount of carbs means making food choices based on overall health - rather than on immediate weight loss, taste preference, or convenience.
