Are you kidding me.....For all of you that do not believe that money talks in the MLB you are crazy. Baseball salaries might not make it all the way and win the world series, but they sure are always huge contenders in the last week of October and later in November. Prime example everyone knows who I am about to say.....the New York Yankees. They have the biggest bank roll in the MLB and they know how to spend. I mean having Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriquez, Jason Giambi, Jorge Posada, and more. Also, lets not forget about that expensive pitching and coaching staff.
I personally despise the Yankess, but I cannot help but notice that they are always in the playoff picture. Put it this way what did the Yankees do last year and the year before to boost there spot into the playoffs. Let's see went out got Johnny Damon and Alex Rodriquez. If you look at the top ten player's salaries in the MLB you have four Yankees. Giambi $23,428,571 a year, A-Rod $22,708,525, Jeter $21,600,000, and Pettitte $16,000,000. When you can fork out that kind of cash for four players it is hard for a team like Tampa Bay to beat a team like the Yankess. The Devil Rays spent only about 25,000,000 for the whole team. And now you have these other teams such as the Mets, Cubs, and Angels to name just a few, starting to get a larger bank roll and actually spending it. Now look at the results, Angels clinch their division, Cubs are about to clinch theirs, and Red Sox are heading to the playoffs once again.
Yet every year you always have that one team that barely puts out any money for players and makes the playoffs and sometimes wins the world series. Ask the Florida Marlins when they won their first world series. They only spent $19,870,000 on the whole team, but rarely will a team like the Marlins win a world series with that little amount spent on a team. If you look at overall payroll versus record of the top three records in baseball and the worst teams in baseball you will see the correlation between the two.
The Redsox have the best record in baseball right now at 93-64 and they spend around $144 million a year on their players and the Angels that have the second best record in baseball at 92-66 spend around $110 million on theirs. Yankees and Mets are also in the middle 100 million range. While you have the two worst teams in baseball the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (65-92) and the Flordia Marlins (67-90), also having the lowest amount of baseball salary in the league. Tampa Bay puts out around $24 million a year and Florida around $30 million a year. It is easy to see that if you are willing to pay big bucks than you will make the playoffs.
