What you need to know about living trusts

by jayj

If you are thinking about preparing for the future, it is a good idea to consider making a 'living will'. You often see the young especially, living life as if they are not mortal. It is strange to think that one day you may be having fun and the next you could be dead.

It is strange, unusual and weird to think about living wills during your day to day existance. A lot of people want to enjoy their life on a day to day existence and others just cannot realize that death may be an untimely reality! However, maybe we should think about this, because terrible things happen in the world daily and many die young! We would make our lives much easier if we were prepared for these unforseen disasters, accidents or ill health.

A living will enables you to say when you want to end your life. The pain of an illness may be too much. Perhaps you have been involved in an accident which leaves you imobile and you consider that your life is not worth living. The living will gives you a way out.

Finally, a living will should generally be thought of as a legal document which gives the licence to terminate your life. For instance, if your heart stops you will be able to ask that you are not resucitated. You can also refuse external feeding and any other life supporting aids. On the other hand, the legal issue is that the doctors may not be aware of this living will. It is therefore imperative that you reconfirm your wishes to your friends and relatives. Make sure that they have the living will to hand, or have access to it.
