Dan Rather is an arrogant schmuck. Media stars with inflated egos, such as Rather, Rosie O'Donnell, Star Jones, Barbara Walters, Katie Courec and others seem to forget that they are merely employees. Just because their publicists tell them they are immortal beings, they feel they are invulnerable to the business rules that determine all of us who work for a buck.
Like others in the entertainment business, they begin their careers by applying for entry-level jobs of gofers or junior TV station staffers. When they first creep into their future employers' offices, meekly waving their resumes and video samples, they are like job seekers in any other business who want to build autos, flip burgers or write newspaper stories.
Too often, those who are lucky ... not necessarily more qualified ... to get anointed to keep moving up the employment ladder until they become grossly-overpaid anchors, forget their humble beginnings. More typically, they also get so swell-headed that they forget they are still employees and subject to the decisions of their corporate movers and shakers.
If your employers at the burger palace feel they want to replace you, you don't run out and hire a room full of lawyers to sue the buns off of your MacBosses. When your newspaper editor feels you should be replaced by a younger and more hip writer, you don't sic a pack of hungry ambulance chasers on the publishers. You pick yourself up, curse the bastards and hit the sidewalk again.
Hey, Dan Rather. You're 75 years old, and you have enough money to fill a dozen mattresses in your posh mansion, speedboat and three vacation villas. For your own sake, as well as for the many hungry young TV reporters who deserve to get a shot at your type of overpaid career, call off your lawyers, give it up. It is long past time when you should fade into the sunset along with Walter Kronkite. And for everyone else's sake, please take 75-year-old Barbara Walters with you!
