I would imagine that the terminology of friendship is different from genders as well as age groups. Men tend to have close friends that they do things with as far as interests go...sports, events, going out clubbing and having them over at the house.
With that aside, work relationships will also entail some of the fore-mentioned but with work being the backdrop of conversation or interests. I know a couple of men that travel either globally or within the states and for the most part, the people they work with, are the people that they forge a friendship or kinship with because of the loneliness of being away from home.
Women on the other hand, have the intimate friendships that are smaller in numbers. Sometimes, if they are lucky enough, these friends are their siblings or people that they have had long lasting friendships from their school days. Women are talkers but they don't talk with just anyone. Sometimes, these friendships can be so candid or open, it's just like sharing your privacy with a counselor or psychiatrist!
Then, there is the age group variances. Younger men and women in their twenties and early thirties, have different friends for different interests. Once you get older, you realize that people go their separate ways and in the end, it's the close and personal friends that remain.
There really is no right type of friendship to be had. We seem to evolve as we age, become more connected with certain people whether it's raising our children together, being traveling companions or next door neighbors or the friends that have always been there, through the thick and thin.
Now, I have to call my friends, just to let them know how much I appreciate them being there for me~
