There is no reason for O.J. to flee the United States. He is an infamous celebrity. Even if he goes to jail, he will remain a point of attraction. For whatever reason, people watch O.J.
He enjoys the spotlight, it seems, for he constantly attracts the media. Whether it is with a spectacular court case, a book describing a heinous crime, or an armed robbery, O.J. is a magnet for the press.
If he goes to a country where people do not know him, his "super-stardom" will fade. Stars have gravity, pulling people and things towards them. It may be offensive to think of O.J. as a star, but who has received more press than the has over the past twelve years?
The odds are that he probably does not believe that jail time is a real possibility. He could be right to think that way. There are 3 theories for this:
1. He was guilty of murder in 1995, and got away with it. Armed robbery pales in comparison to murder... or
2. He was innocent in 1995, and the court system saw through the media hype and mountain of circumstantial evidence.
3. He may feel that he was set-up in the armed robbery charge. Since the jury saved him once, then they will do it again.
Of course, there is no way to know exactly what he is thinking. But, while fleeing the country may be something to consider, it is not entirely feasible. There are few places in the world that he could go without being recognized by someone. The press and law enforcement officers are most likely watching his every move, just hoping that he will try to flee.
Simpson's attorney has assured the judge, the ever vigilant media, and the public that his client will not leave the U.S. He said that O.J. wants to be with his children and friends. Hopefully, that is truly the case.
He is facing eleven offenses, including 2 counts of conspiracy to commit kidnapping with a deadly weapon, two counts of robbery with a deadly weapon, and assault with a deadly weapon. Those are hefty charges which will hold hefty consequences.
But, considering all that Simpson has been through, whether self-inflicted or not, the odds are that he can handle this and will stay to face the music.
