Really? Is that how coaches are hired? Since I am not a huge sports fan and do not analyze statistics, I was caught off guard by this new way of determining coaching jobs.
Seems like it would be more appropriate to hire the most qualified candidate. Track records will speak for themselves.
The students who sign on to play college ball are in it to win it. They want to be the best athletes that they can be. This requires the best coaches available . Race doesn't enter into that equation.
It has been rumored that the BCA (Black Coaches Association) intends to put out a Hiring Report Card next year alerting football recruits about the lack of African-American candidates hired. This Hiring Card is also meant to show the hiring practices of recruiting schools.
This puts players in a tough position. An 18 year old kid who is excited about playing ball for a college team does not need the added pressure of making a stand. He has an individual accomplishment to strive for, not an entire "issue" to stand up against.
These boys have spent hundreds, if not thousands, of hours at home for the majority of their lives preparing for this moment of recruitment Why make them thake a stand at this point in their lives? Let them enjoy the moment. They want the best coach, who can help them excel and move forward, regardless of race.
Asking a star high school player who is ready to make his name in college football to boycott a college is a bit much. Let them play where they want and deserve to be. Let them enjoy the glory.
By playing for a school that is known to discriminate in hiring practices, that does not make that 18 year old player any less of an athlete. If he is truly good, he will shine no matter where he is. It is his time for fame1 Leave the coaching issues out of it for these young men who have worked so hard.
What happened to the love of the game? Let them love it! Don't put these young payers in the middle of it, coaches.
Fight your own battles...
