Memoirs: True dog hero stories

"AJ"! I watched as my English Shepherd came bounding across the pasture, his bark telling me he is happy at being called in. The connection between us started the day I brought him home. He was only eight weeks old thus beginning the training journey we took together. I believe the love and emotional output given to my dog was just as important as the training and he responded with love and devotion, constantly by my side.

As time passed we grew inseparable; he loved the rides in the truck and was always ready to be where I was. Our walks around the ranch became an everyday occurrence and during the winter nights in Arizona he would lay at my feet while I enjoyed the night stars and the peaceful sounds of ranch. The work days were busy, spending the mornings together we set off to feed and water the horses; he would follow my every step and was ever watchful.

The days turned into years and my love grew with each new day, I knew if my dog could talk he would say how much he loved me too. No words could describe my love for him the day he saved my life and I knew at that moment his devotion to man went above and beyond just the word love itself. I was working in the barn that morning and needed to bring in more hay I had no idea that hay had been pulled from the back near the bottom and the hay pallets had become unbalanced. I was on top pulling at a bale when the whole pile began sliding under my weight; with nothing to hold on to I began screaming as I tumbled to the ground with the whole hay pile coming down around me.

I could hear AJ barking as I tried to move only to scream out in pain again, the stress in AJ's bark told me he could only hear me, his bark was different, I could hear fear in his bark and could tell he was running around the pile desperate to see me. "AJ"! I cried out, not sure what he could do, I could feel him digging on the outer edge of the pile of hay bales when I felt a tug at one of the bottom pallets he was trying to pull me free, my dog was trying to pull me free! I couldn't believe it. I tried to move but more pain shot through my legs and AJ's bark turned to howls as I cried out. The years of bonding and growing together brought us to this point, could love and trust make a difference now?

Could he? Would he? I thought "What do I do!" I cried, what did I have to lose was the real question. My breathing was becoming harder and faster, the weight of the hay was taking its toll on my legs. "Think" I said to myself, was a dogs love enough?
