If a family being able to share the experience of reading together is NOT an American value, then yes J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series perverts it. What are we stupid? Of course not! Since the 1980's it has been encouraged that parents should read with and to their children, Ms. Rowling's books have made it a more enjoyable experience. And statistically over the years reading for pleasure amongst young people has steadily declined. What does this say about the parents of America? Are they reading to the kids, or are they plopping them down in front of the television and letting them watch a bunch of rubbish with extra violence? I'll give you three guesses on that one. Then there's all of this hooplah with people talking about how the books are anti-Christian...sorry but give me a break! The books never mention ANY religion! The kids do however celebrate Christmas every year. And this other business about 'perverting American values'...if you have taken the time to read any of the books you would know that some of the lessons shown through out are: Loyalty (god forbid any American child should show that), friendship, and that we can overcome evil with good (is that still an American value?). As you see unless we as Americans are either scared out of our wits by a British woman teaching responsible values to our children or find it terrifying that someone is making it easier for parents to share the experience of reading with them, then this discussion is a mute point.

Are we crazy? Harry Potter, perverting American values? If we even entertain this thought we have lost many of our own values.
