Paris is like a car accident, you know you shouldn't look but there's something morbidly fascinating that makes you slow down as you pass by.
Her name conjures up many things - reality star, pop princess, billionaire heiress, blonde, model, thin - many things that women today aspire to be. There's nothing wrong with being successful, rich or blonde but Paris Hilton is the exception in that she's made a career out of being dumb and talked about. If she were known for her charity work and intelligence, would we be so interested?
An intelligent, skinny blonde role model crusading for human rights - that's nice but boring. The reason why people love to hate Paris is because she is the ultimate mean girl. She has everything and proudly flaunts it in a condescending 'I'm better then you and you know it' way. She is an 'It' girl but for all the wrong reasons. As women we are expected to be nice girls and Paris is the complete opposite.
With the attention span of a young child, she changes friends, fiancees and careers as quickly as she does her clothes. So why are we fascinated with her every move? The answer is simple. Women love to gossip. If that weren't true, there wouldn't be a market for someone like Paris. The more outrageous she is, the more we laugh and yet some people still see her as something of an icon. Yes, fame, fortune and a fabulous wardrobe are great but there comes a point in life when everyone wants more.
Soon enough, Paris will run out of ways to shock us and someone younger, richer and meaner will come along and knock her off her throne and claim the title of Queen.
Paris Hilton will not be someone who will influence history or change the world for the better - if anything she is a reminder of all the things I am disgusted by. The message she sends to young women is, "I'm an attention seeking sexual ignorant object with power, money and no sense of responsibility".
We live in a society with conflicting messages. We are told love yourself and your body as it is but Nicole Richie who among amongst other size zeros clearly has an eating disorder is considered a fashion icon. If young women are going to have any sense of pride and self respect then they need role models with values. Not genital flashing, drug abusing nymphomaniacs with too much money, fame and not enough sense.
I look forward to the day when the creative intellectuals of society are seen on magazine covers and being smart is the new sexy. Then again maybe I'm just a naive optimist. After all, when was the last time an author was put on the cover of a magazine?
