There are so many different kinds of items around your house that will bring brass and copper back to its shiny pristine condition without the use of chemicals. Here are a few tried and tested ways that I do know work, and will not cost you a fortune.
Vinegar works very well when rubbed in and taken off again. If you don't have vinegar try brown sauce, honest it works.
Lemon and salt mixed together and gently rubbed in and then buffed off.
Small items soaked in Coca Cola overnight will come up lovely and shiny.
Toothpaste worked in with a toothbrush and then buffed off.
A very old way of buffing up brass and copper and this will only work if it is a small item like a badge or a medal, is too hold the item over a lit candle until it turns black and then polish it up. This is something they used to do during war time, and I have heard my Grand-dad mention this many a time in his tales.
Anything citrus, like oranges, limes and lemons mixed with a small amount of water and rubbed in will also do the trick pretty well.
I can honestly say all the above do work, even the candle trick, although this is more of a last resort in my mind. Some people would say that brass and copper though is much better when it has the appearance of the aged look rather thanshiny and new, I beg to differ.
