We've all seen those shouting parents at the golf course, dragging behind miserable looking children. To avoid becoming one of those parents, avoid some common mistakes parents make when golfing with their kids.
(1) Find a golf course with other children. One of the biggest mistakes parents make is choosing a golf course designed for adults. Most children are inexperienced or have very little experience with golfing, and spending time on a course for adults can be frustrating and upsetting. Pick a golf course that children frequent, and allows juveniles. There's nothing worse than arriving at the course and learning that they don't allow children.
(2) Realize that unless your child is the next Tiger Woods, they are going to get frustrated by golfing and may have a minor meltdown on the golf course. Behave exactly as you would off the course, but be aware that a tantrum can disturb other golfers, and maybe even set off other children on the course. Try and explain to your children how the course works and the amount of time you'll be golfing beforehand. And if your children are ready to go home, go home. Don't wait until a tantrum occurs first.
(3) Use clubs the appropriate size for your children. I can't count how many times I've seen children using their parents' clubs on the golf course, and naturally getting frustrated. Imagine how you would feel if someone gave you a set of miniature golf course clubs and told you to play nine holes. You would get frustrated and annoyed, and this is exactly how your kids feel. Try to find clubs that fit them, and see if the golf course has rentals available before booking a tee time.
(4) Most importantly, make sure your children are ready to spend a day on the course. If your child feels bored, tired, or upset, eighteen holes or even nine holes are only going to worsen their feelings. Besides upsetting them, it will also frustrate you and annoy other golfers on the course. Make sure your kids are prepared for a day of golfing, or face the consequences.
Using these four tried and true tips, you can ensure that your kids will enjoy a day at the golf course, and not upset anyone in the process.
