Presidential debates are controlled in order to allow freedom of speech. The candidates are limited to the issue at hand and given time to answer and respond.

These debates provide a closer look at the issues that the candidates will be dealing with once in office. The debates are important as many people who tune in to the debates wouldn't watch other programs dealing with the political opponents. The presidential debates have become an important part of the political process.

The questions in the debates are structured and fair to both opponents as they both have the opportunity to respond to the other's answers.

As far as the free speech aspect, there is a time alloted at the end of the debate for the candidates to make a statement to further expand upon an issue which they didn't feel they had enough time to respond to during the debate.

The presidential debates have become something that can make or break a candidate. Are the debates perfectly fair, always? No. One side or the other will grumble about the outcome to news reporters after the event.

The most important aspect of the presidential debates is that it encourages the candidates to familiarize themselves with all of the issues in preparation for the event. This by design encourages the candidates to be familiar with even the seemingly insignificant issue which they made be faced with if elected.

The US presidential debates are controlled, but in no way do they interfere with a candidates freedom of speech.
