With any software capable of converting audio CDs to MP3s, the process will be very simple. In this article, I'll pick Windows Media Player as the software, simply because it's installed on most computers running MS Windows. Other applications require downloading them first from the Internet before use.
WMP has a 'Rip' feature, accessible from the top bar with the word 'Rip'. Adjust the ripping option from menu Tools|Options, from tab 'Rip music'. At the top section, you can determine where to put the ripped files. By default, it's the "My Music" folder in "My documents". Then, at the lower section, we are free whether to choose Microsoft's WMA (Windows Media Audio) format or the MP3 format, as well as adjusting the quality settings we need. Quality is compensated with the space required for music ripping. Better quality means more spaces required. Generally, WMA is smaller than MP3 at the same quality settings level. WMA is the default in Windows Media Player.
After adjusting the Rip music option, we are now ready to do the actual ripping. Simply enter the audio CD into the drive, and wait for the WMP to respond. Once identified, WMP will list all the tracks of the CD in the Rip window. By default, WMP will rip all tracks. We are free to untick the tracks we don't want.
Click on "Rip music" button at the upper right corner, and WMP will start the ripping, store the files in determined location, and voila!
PS: audio cable must be connected between the CD drive to the sound card or the motherboard.
