Ideal vacation spots

Undisturbed beaches splattered with exotic shells and ocean treasures, dolphins dipping playfully through the ocean waves, wild horses playing in the rolling surf, sand dunes rising to the sky.

The Outer Banks is a virtual paradise for the true beach connoisseur and nature lover! And it's a vacation paradise for travelers on a budget! It includes the towns of Corolla, Duck, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, and Roanoke Island, and all the way to the undeveloped shores of Hatteras Island.

Having spent several weeks each year for the past 15 years at Nags Head in North Carolina, my family and I have discovered ways to make every year new and different. There are a myriad of ways to explore the coast and enjoy the family-friendly recreational activities and history that abound on the Outer Banks.

Where to Stay

The best vacation starts with the best places to stay. And there are many. The highest rates on the beach are typically between June 15 and August 20. Off-season rates are extremely affordable and many real estate companies lease houses for partial weeks during the off-season, increasing your savings! There are many ocean-front hotels along the beach as well as hundreds of beautifully appointed beach houses!

Whether you're looking for something small and intimate or a spacious 19-bedroom home, you'll find it on the Outer Banks. Most realty companies in the area offer online virtual tours of the homes they lease so get busy and start searching! Since the island is so narrow, you're usually within walking distance of the water whether you stay on the oceanfront, the soundfront, or somewhere in-between.

Where to Dine

Family friendly, affordable restaurants are found throughout the island. The Dunes is one of the most well-known restaurants on the island serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Seafood, fresh vegetables, and decadent desserts are specialties. A varied menu with family-friendly prices makes this restaurant a "must visit" on your trip.

Owens Restaurant is a little more upscale but well worth the money for lunch or dinner. The chefs there have definitely worked their culinary skills overtime to create pleasing dishes to suit the tastes of everyone. Delectable seafood dishes prepared with local seafood and complemented with fresh vegetables, homemade dressings, and creative side dishes and sauces are incredibly delicious. If you're a land-lover, the steaks and beef are equally as delicious. And the desserts are a major plus IF you still have room for
