While I would say that both are extremely annoying, gossip in the workplace shows a great deal of ignorance. It also tends to show that either you are not doing your work, or you simply do not have enough work to do.

People always write off the gossip as normal, and something that is inevitable in a workplace, particularly in an office setting. But those that say that are usually the ones who either are the gossips, or help to fuel all the rumors.

A tattletale may sometimes call people to task, but a gossip will simply take bits and pieces of the truth and string them together to form very hurtful stories about people with whom they work. Often times, if the rumors reach the wrong people, this can be very damaging to the subjects career, home life and overall reputation.

Gossip is also annoying because it shows the lack of intelligence that people have in general. With so many different aspects of life to discuss, why is it so necessary to become involved in the lives of others? Point out parts of your favorite show, or discuss a new hobby that you have started. Or, if you're looking for something a bit deeper, how about starting a debate on global warming or the educational system? Why do you have to demean a co-worker to provide fodder for your lunchtime gab?

Sometimes what is even more annoying about gossip is that the person who gossips is usually the first to say that they don't understand why people gossip so much. And all it takes is one or two people to put an end to this childishness, but it is so much easier to go with the flow.

The bottom line is that gossip is annoying because it gets you absolutely nowhere in life, and if you dish it out, be prepared for karma to turn the tables on you. At the end of the day, show that you are an intelligent human being and have something more solid to contribute to your co-workers than, "oh did you hear who so and so is sleeping with..." Grow up, gossipers. You are arguably adults.
