Understanding equality issues in a free world

normally think of as a case about speech. "Brown held that segregated schools were inherently unequal because of the message that segregated conveyed-that black children were an untouchable caste, unfit to go to school with white children." (Lawrence.52). According to him it was not good and was signs of racist.
On the other hand "Protecting Freedom of Expression on the Campus" by Derek Bok from "Current Issues And The Enduring Questions" it is about freedom of speech should be protected and harmful speech and should be ignored. Bok is the president of the Harvard University; he has received his law degree from Stanford University and Harvard University. He talks about the issues of the racism in Harvard University by giving examples. He says that "appropriate officials and faculty members should take the lead, as the Harvard house masters have already done in this case. In talking with students, they should seek to educate and persuade, rather than resort to ridicule or intimidation, recognizing that only persuasion is likely to produce a lasting, beneficial effect. (Bok.58). Through such effects, I believe that we act in the manner most consistent with our ideals as an educational institution and most calculated to help us create a truly understanding, supportive community." he believes Harvard university, which is a private University should not have less free speech than the surrounding society-or public university. He gives an example of incident occurred on his campus that, "two students hung confederate flags in public view, upsetting students who equate the confederacy with slavery. A third student tried to protect the flags by displaying a swastika." (Bok.57)


Freedom should be to a limit and one should take care that it do not effect others rights and feelings. Lawrence believes that freedom of speech should not be on others rights and values. He has experienced racist in his life and applies his law knowledge to express his experience. Bok on the bases of his experience thinks that freedom of speech should be protected. Freedom of speech can cause racism and it should be protected as everyone has rights to provide equal justifications to everyone.
Diversity is all over the world now days, which leads interaction of different cultures of people. Different cultures of people can face racism as some speech can be hurtful to one and not to other.
