I guess I can take you home." Kim was startled when Nikolas suddenly grabbed her shirt and practically yelled "NO!" She looked at him confusedly.
"I,I am not allowed in my home any longer." He whispered, hiding his eyes beneath his bangs.
Kim immediately felt sorry of the kid. Obviously something had happened, wherever he came from, that either made him not want to go home, or someone had kicked him out. Kim was determined to find out either way.
"Why aren't you allowed to go home? Where is your home?" she asked softly.
"Humph. You are not of my world so you do not know of my land. But, the name of my home is Tierra Hermosa."
"Tierra-whata? Is that a country?"
"Yes." He said. "It's a beautiful place, which I am no longer allowed to see." Nikolas rested his head against the back of the couch and sighed.
Kim plopped down next to him and asked
"Why aren't you allowed to go back home?" he tilted his head to look up at the ceiling, emerald eyes infinitely sad.
"I am not allowed to go home because of a crime I committed in the name of someone very dear to me. I was caught in my revenge and the only reason I am not dead because my dear one pleaded for my life. Instead I was exiled." Nikolas turned to his strange female companion when he heard her soft chuckling, which soon turned to outright laughter. What was so funny?
Kim laughter soon faded to tired giggles and he asked her what was funny about his predicament.
"It's just so unbelievable." She breathed. "Not that I don't believe you, but this sounds like something out of the fantasy books my students like to read."
She smiled and giggled again. "Maybe I'm going crazy, but as long as you're around, I'll give insanity a try. Who knows? Maybe you are real and can keep me company in this big ol'house." They sat in silence for a moment before Kim got up and headed to the kitchen to make some more ramen for herself, and told Nikolas to finish his before it got cold.
In the kitchen, Kim stood at the stove absentmindedly stirring the soup while thinking about the stranger sitting in her living room. Should she let him stay? From his story he obviously had nowhere to go, and if those ears were genuine, then so was his explanation.
Her mind said no'. The kid was probably just a runaway that needed to go home, and if the ears were real, back to the laboratory that made him that way.
Her heart pleaded yes'. His story was true and she knew it. Nikolas needed a home, a friend. And so did she.
She pulled away from her inner wrestling
