There is an easy answer to the problem of moderately high blood pressure. It is as close to you as your drug store. What is it? It is the mineral, magnesium. In fact, if you do an internet search for magnesium at the National Library of Medicine, you will find that magnesium aids in over 300 different ailments! Magnesium plays a major role in heart health, including blood pressure. Over 80% of people in North America are magnesium deficient and are not aware of it. To complicate things further, magnesium can be difficult for the body to absorb and most magnesium tablets, like most nutritional supplements, are only absorbed in small quantities. Taking minerals and vitamins in liquid form enhances their absorption rate.
There are many different types of magnesium on the market. Some of them, which I have personally tried, have such a low bio-availability or absorption rate, that they are basically worthless. Why are such products on the market? They are extremely inexpensive to produce, and the mark-ups and profit margins are high. The public, in general, does not understand the differences between various types of magnesium, so they buy a magnesium product with a low absorption rate, thinking that it will be beneficial, when it may not provide any benefits at all.
Another complicating factor is the fact that magnesium and calcium work synergistically together. If one has a diet high in calcium, such as dairy products, a person may think they are promoting good bone health, but if they have a magnesium deficiency, then they can take all the dairy products they want, but the calcium will not be retained sufficiently in the body. The same is true when taking magnesium supplements. The magnesium absorption rate will be low if a person has a deficiency in calcium. That is why you will quite often find calcium and magnesium, combined together, in one nutritional supplement in drug stores.
Calcium and magnesium work better together than separately and this is a good way to get two very important minerals into your body. Calcium/magnesium supplements contain elemental calcium and elemental magnesium, which are absorbed well and are worth your money to buy. Usually the ratio that is sold is 2 parts calcium to 1 part magnesium. There has always been a debate among doctors as to the correct ratio for the intake of calcium and magnesium. Many say that the 2/1 ratio is correct, while other doctors claim that the ratio should be 1/1,
