MLB: What it's like to be a Los Angeles Dodgers fan

I would be happy to tell you what it is like being a LA Dodger fan. A true Dodger fan bleeds blue as they say. Growing up I watched such greats as Pedro Guerrero, Steve Sax, Mike Scoscia, Mike Marshall, Orel Hershiser, Mickey Hatcher and Kirk Gibson. The first baseball game I went to was in LA at Chavez Ravine. From that time on I was a Dodger fan and am still a Dodger fan to this day.

Tommy Lasorda who coached The Dodgers for many years really loved his ball club and it showed. His mentality was that you live, breathe, sleep, and eat Dodger Blue. At Chavez Ravine, the site of Dodger Stadium in the parking lot area a permanent sign reads Think Blue. Tommy Lasorda was a true character and really gave you the idea that he cared about his ball clubs.

In 1988, Orel Hershiser pitched 59 scoreless innings setting , at the time a new scoreless inning streak. He could be seen praying and singing hymns while out on the mound. Later that year with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th inning in the World Series an injured Kirk Gibson came off the bench to hit the come from behind game winning home run. I will never forget Mickey Hatcher's face as The Dodgers streamed off the bench and on to the field. As a child watching this I was mesmerized and remember running upstairs to my moms room yelling with excitement about what I had just witnessed.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are a team with great history going back to when they were The Brooklyn Dodgers. Old timers like Sandy Koufax, Duke Snyder, Pee Wee Reese have graced The Dodgers uniform. Of course that was before I was born. Tommy Lasorda taught me about what it is like to truly care about something even more than my own father, and for that I am forever grateful.

Though it seems more and more players are not playing for the love of the game anymore, I will never forget that 1988 World Series. Kirk Gibson hit the game winning home run off Dennis Eckersley and The Dodgers went on to win the series. God bless them Dodgers.
