Guide to skiing Whistler, Canada on a budget

by Jen H

Are you a smart, budget-minded individual or family considering a vacation to Whistler? Read on to discover how it can be done!

Pristine, Whistler, BC offers skiers and riders North America's largest ski area, greatest vertical, the worlds most advanced terrain parks and half pipes and an annual average snowfall of almost 33 feet. Nestled cozily at the base of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains sits Whistler Village - a vital site to the 2010 Winter Olympics. This idyllic pedestrian village boasts world class shopping, dining and nightlife. Together, these amenities contribute to making this resort the continents #1 ranked resort.

Unfortunately, this winter jewel on Canada's West Coast doesn't come cheap. Luxury hotels, spas, restaurants and bars sprawl around the bases of both mountains creating an illusion that only the wealthy can afford to vacation here.

As a budget conscious visitor to Whistler myself, I've compiled a guide to vacationing there without the financial hit you might expect.

GETTING THERE

Whistler Village is pedestrian-only. The majority of accommodations are located within walking distance of both mountain bases. Do yourself (and the environment)a favor by avoiding the cost and hassle of a rental vehicle and enjoy the scenic route via bus from Vancouver. Greyhound does approximately seven trips daily along the Sea-to-Sky Highway for only $37.60 return. For the 25 and younger set, check out Snowbus at www.snowbus.ca where you can enjoy on-board movies and breakfast in a luxury coach with your peers. An excellent way to get pumped up for a day of skiing or riding.

THE MOUNTAIN

EDGE Card - If you're a regular visitor to Whistler, consider investing in an EDGE Card (available to Canadian and Washington state residents only). The EDGE Card's prices are based on how often you plan on visiting the mountain during the season and offers a load of extra perks such as discounts on food, clothing and services. An extraordinary savings. For more information on the EDGE Card visit http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/tickets/edge/index. htmt

Warren Miller Films - Hit up the annual Warren Miller Film event in Vancouver and receive a 2 for 1 dual mountain pass. Of course, it includes black out dates - but is still an exceptional value in my opinion. Don't have a friend to go halvers with? Just ask anybody in the line-up at the ticket window.
