Oh no, another hypothetical battle between fictional characters that have never fought. Let us presume on the reader for a moment that they have not already made up their mind and that reading this may in some small way sway their opinion on the subject.

I think it is obvious that Vader was the most powerful entity in the Star Wars universe. Darth Sidious obviously knew this. The Jedi council obviously was equally aware of this.

Before we tackle the huge subject of who would win in a lightsabre duel between Darth Vader and Darth Maul there is a point that I must bring to light just in case the reader never noticed it. How did Vader balance the force? By killing all the jedi with the exception of two leaving the light side with two jedi and the dark side with two Sith Lords. In some ways this did balance the force and in others it left a hulking void that the Sith were able to capitalize upon but after 10,000 years of Jedi protectorship the Republic was due to have the Sith over balance the scales for a while.

Darth Vader, more machine than man and yet fully in control of the forces Dark Side. He believed that he could take the emperor before his battle with Obi-Wan on Mustafar and had he not had to fight Obi-Wan may very well have been emperor himself. So our first stance is which Darth Vader would be the one to fight this Titanic Duel with Darth Maul? Both Vaders existed after the death of Darth Maul. But it is my belief that the younger Darth Vader is the one to whom we must look to fight against the irrepressible Darth Maul. The sabre style of Darth Maul is the double bladed lightsabre of the ancient past while Darth Vader has shown that he is more than capable of wielding multiple lightsabres and is actually quite the swordsman with that style. The Younger Vader that fights Obi Wan is every bit as athletic and shows the same agility that Darth Maul did.

With this in mind I must think that Darth Vader would not have been so overconfident in a fight with another Sith Lord as he was with his former master and friend Obi Wan. No, Sith Apprentice is actually an apprentice since there are only two at any one time, a master and an apprentice and the stronger always takes the role of Master the title apprentice is honorary and intended to degrade the person who holds it a fact the emperor did not wish to stress with his young ally and so called him a Lord. Darth Maul never believed himself capable of taking on Darth Sideous at the time of his death although his overconfidence against the Jedi was apparent as he was more than willing to take on two at once.

In the end, I believe the young Darth Vader would have been more than a match for Darth Maul or the Emperor. He would not be so overconfident against a Sith as a Sith believing that the Sith are stronger than a Jedi as all Sith Believe would have tempered his arrogance and shown more caution than he did against Obi Wan who infuriated him by what he called under estimating "his power". But even the emperor knew that Vader was the most powerful and took steps to ensure that should he ever choose to use that power against him Vader himself would die.
