The die-hard, old-school writers will still tell you that internet sites that pay per page view or through ad revenue are not 'real' writing publications, and you should avoid them at all costs.
Well, I was a freelance writer (both electronic and print publications) before the new internet freelance writing models came into play, and I will tell you that I take a completely different view on pay by view or ad revenue model freelance writing sites than many of my old-time writing colleagues.
Marketing and promoting are now as much a part of writing as the actual writing. Writing is often said to be a talent, an art, while business sense and know-how are more learned skills. The required drive to do each come from very different parts of the brain, and those who are only interested in the art of writing will potentially lose out on the business end of writing.
Believe me, there are many talented authors and writers whose work will never see the light of a publisher's desk because they altruistically believed only in the art of writing and completely neglected the business end of it.
And there is a business end to it!
Looking at freelance writing sites that pay only by performance versus those that pay in advance or upon publication, initially, one may feel a bit intimidated. Yes, it can take a long time before page views and ad revenue build enough to bring in any significant money. However, they can bring in significant money, and not only that, they do it regularly, every month, without you having to do any additional work.
Residual income is the wave of the future-put in a lot of work upfront and continue to profit and benefit from that work months or even years down the road, without any additional invested time. The internet allows for this in every field, and freelance writing is no exception, now that pay by view or ad revenue freelance sites are taking the forefront in the freelance writing and content industry.
Let me see if I can explain it in terms of how the publishing industry as a whole currently works.
