If the question were "Should O.J. Simpson go to jail this time?" there would be little disagreement. Most people believe that the debts he owes society for past transgressions are long overdue. But, "Will he go...?" Probably not. There are too many individuals in every segment of society who are willing and eager to step up and help him avoid jail time.

First in line are the lawyers. So what if he can't afford to pay them? The publicity they will receive from this one case will attract all kinds of wealthy clients for years to come. The media follow O.J. around like hungry dogs after a sirloin steak. The name and face of the legal eagle at his side will soon become a familiar sight on the T.V. screens of America. The value of this volume of free publicity is incalculable. Mr. Simpson will be able to assemble the best defense team available.

Next to indirectly help keep him out of jail will be the politicians. With elections coming up in 2008, no one wants to risk alienating minority voters by speaking out for justice for O.J. The best we can expect from that quarter is silence, as they desperately hope the whole issue will quietly go away.

Civil officials and law enforcement officers in large cities dread having to contend with the race riots which would probably ensue if O.J. were marched off to prison in handcuffs, in full view of the ever-present media. Some young radicals of every race need very little excuse to start trouble, and they are capable of causing significant damage to property and seriously threatening public safety, before being brought under control.

Finally, there are die-hard football fans around who would defend one of their own if he had nuclear bombs and was threatening to blow up the planet! Some of them may be judges, or jurors or prison guards or just plain hangers-on. They are quite willing to help him raid a hotel room, cause a deadlocked jury, or escape custody.

For these reasons, I predict that O.J. will not serve time in prison. I hope I'm wrong. With his lack of morals, poor anger management skills, physical strength and agility, no one around him is safe.

In addition, he's costing tax-payers a lot of money. Multiple arrests, trials, salaries for judges and court officials, police guards, rides in the paddy wagon and other associated costs do not come cheaply. Meanwhile, it's not bothering O.J. at all. He struts around like a peacock, smirking and waving at the T.V. cameras. It's certainly time that his past misdeeds caught up with him.
