Poetry: A daughter's wedding day

To My Daughter On Her Wedding Day

I write this poem to you
To tell you how I think
Though you are not from my blood
We are forever linked

Raising you was such a joy
You have no idea how much
Watching while you grew up
My life forever touched

There were times of great joy
And there was sadness too
Because all I ever wanted
Was what was best for you

I didn't know how to raise a child
When it was at first we met
I read the books and talked to people
To be the best that you could get

I made mistakes while raising you
Of this I have no doubt
Though all I did, I did from love
In hopes that you'd turn out

And turn out you did
Beyond my wildest dreams
If humanity is the milk
Then I'd say you're the cream

You're open and honest
And you have a great big heart
And you turning out the way you did
I am glad I had a part

And then a little while ago
You gave me the world's best gift
By saying something to me
That gave my heart a lift

The phrase that you told me then
I saw as a gift from me to you
When you looked at me and said
I'm glad I turned out just like you
