Most mistakes can be avoided when golfing with your children by respecting the traditions of golf, both written and unwritten. Behavior, and observing the essential rules of golf are of utmost importance when beginning golfers start to interact with "old-timers". Respect for the traditions of golf, and those dedicated to the game can solve most problems before they exist.
Trying to golf with beginners during prime times is probably a mistake. Slow, and erratic play is frustrating to those that have their regular foursome out on the course as they enjoy their "Tiger Woods" moments. Seek a tee-time that will avoid the conflict of serious golfers having to suffer through the problems of beginner golfers. If the course should be crowded, be sure to observe the courtesy of letting faster golfers play-through.
Many golfing beginners do not fully understand the need to not distract others as they play. Noise, and lack of courtesy to others will ruin everyone's day. Every new golfer should understand the rules, and expectations of those around them. Discipline is essential to the game of golf, and a great starting point for any aspiring golfer.
Those who golf regularly usually replace their divots automatically, and fix ball marks on the greens without giving it a thought. Any beginner who fails to observe these courtesies for those following them will be highly criticized. Problems can be avoided by making sure that everyone understands the need to repair divots, ball marks, and rake sand traps that have been disturbed.
Perhaps the biggest mistake of them all on a golf course is to minimize the importance of the rules of golfing. It is a game steeped in tradition, and being a "gentleman" is one of them. Gentlemen follow the rules. Golf is one of the greatest teachers of proper conduct of all sports. If this is instilled in beginners, few problems will exist.
Kids who just want to run around, and play noisily without a purpose don't belong on a golf course. There are places for kids to just be kids. The golf course is a place for kids from 8 years of age to 88 years old. Once everyone knows the rules, we are all kids out there playing a great game!
