I studied in a single sex school. I completed my 10th grade with a second class score of just 57% in final exams. I never thought I could have performed better,if only I had studied in a school where I had female friends too. I never felt that I have to have a competition with my friends and I gave less importance when my friends scored more than me! Believe me, most of my friends were also average students like me and probably scored just like me.

Though I did not change my school, the 11th and 12th grades were co-eds. Initially I was the same old boy and I did my normal studies till I met a beautiful girl from my class. soon we became friends and shared the knowledge, books and notes. I also came to know that she was a first class student from 10th grade and scored 68%( That was a single sex school too). This interest I never had when I studied in junior grades!. I realized that to have an edge over my girl friend, I need to study more and more and update myself with the most recent. I felt, the same enthusiasm and zeal was there with in my girl friend too.

We studied together, debated most of the topics, worked together in the laboratory to dissect,to find out chemical reactions etc... I never used to wake up before 7 AM till my school days and now I woke up at 5 to revise my previous days lessons!

What a great and surprising change!. Believe me I never had any other intentions or thoughts in my mind other than just being a friend. Finally when we passed out of the 12th grade she had scored 83% and I scored 76%. From 57 to 76%... that was a very big difference! And today, she is a Doctor of medicine and I am an Engineer in Electronics.

I am not trying to say this is the only reason where children performed better. They also develop confidence and have lot of energy when they have, in their inner mind, that feeling of "opposite sex could do better than you".

Here is another reason. The interest I was showing towards a male teaching is different than a female teaching. It was true with my girl friend too. She always liked a male teaching than a female teaching. But, I have no answer to Why is this? till today. Probably more experiences shared by other friends on this point may prove it!

So, it is my strong opinion that children could learn better in co-ed schools.
