This most definitely falls into the category of self responsibility. We as a country seem to be moving closer to totally governed nation. I personally don't want the government in on every decision I make every day. who would verify that the numbers were correct, let me guess another government agency? It is our responsibility as consumers to get ourselves informed.
Putting the calorie and fat content on menus would be costly and mostly inaccurate as well. No two chefs prepare foods the same way, one may add or leave out ingredients that others may use. You as the consumer should have an idea of what is healthy to eat and what isn't. If you need a note next to everything you look at then you are being irresponsible.
Most meals are prepared nearly the same way each time, a hamburger steak comes with fried onions unless you request otherwise. If you have any questions the waitress is right there taking you order ask her. If she doesn't know how it is prepared then ask to Cary you question to the chef and if he doesn't know you might want to leave and eat elsewhere.
On top of all this as expensive as food is already are you really willing to pay a good bit extra so that every place that can afford it has to hire someone to do the testing to determine the calorie and fat content of everything on the menu? Not to mention that if this is done then everyone will go to premade items as to cut cost so that chicken fried steak you like down at Joe's with the extra breading will go away and all the chicken fried steaks will be exactly the same no matter where you go. Now I like my chicken fried steak and I appreciate a really good one, I don't want them all to be the same.
When you go to Burger King, McDonald's, Wendy's, Hardees, and any other chain burger joint you know before you walk through the door what that burger will taste like. Now do yo want that everywhere? When you go to a restaurant you get a burger and it's different, I bet the restaurant can't tell you how many calories are in it or how much fat is in it. It's a burger though and you have a good idea and know you can't eat them everyday.
So if you are truly concerned how many calories are in each meal or particular food then look up the basic information yourself while you are waiting for that song to download. You will find that buffalo meat is leaner, they have turkey burgers and all kinds of variety. Look up what you like and you will know the basic information and can ask particular questions before you order.
That way I can still afford my burger and chicken fried steak down at Joe's and don't have to read between all the calories and fats to see what the special is. Now pardon me while I go get that chicken fried steak with the breading made out of flour, eggs (the whole egg not just the whites), and other spices. Eat up folks I hate to be the one to break it to you but two things are for sure about food. You have to eat and you aren't going to live forever.
