Giving up your seat on the bus to someone who needs it more

The question could just as easily be why DON'T you give up your seat on the bus for someone who needs it more than you.

Personally, I find it very hard to watch someone struggling to stand up on a bus lurching drunkenly on the clutch from one gap in the traffic to the next. If I remain in my seat even long enough to think about getting up, my backside starts to itch and I feel like a heel.

I don't always apply the elderly/pregnant/infirm criteria either. If someone is sneezing miserably into a handkerchief, too short to reach a strap comfortably, or even just looks plain old knackered, I get up.

Please be aware of when YOU may really need your seat though. I was on a tube train recently which was held up for half an hour when a gentleman kindly gave up his seat and promptly collapsed (he had flu). Thankfully, he was OK, but hindsight's a wonderful thing, and I hope this genuinely nice guy would be a bit more selfish in future in a similar situation.

Happy strap hanging!
