5 MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WHEN CHOOSING A VACATION CLUB
The most serious errors that nearly everyone who purchased a vacation club membership made are all centered on not doing research on the vacation package or travel club before giving them their money.
This factor is easy to overlook but if you want to avoid losing money to a travel club scam or a fraudulently operated vacation club run by a con man you should avoid the following common mistakes.
1. Failing to recognize tactics used by vacation club scams.
I'm sure you have seen the advertisements in your mailbox or have received an unexpected phone call from a telemarketer saying that"you've won a prize," usually a free trip, in a contest, that you don't even remember entering.
These types of prizes always have a catch such as, in order to activate the reservation you will have to pay a fee or to claim the prize. You may have to attend a sales presentation. Sometimes you may even have to join the vacation club before you will be able to receiving the promised vacation.
In my experience with these discount travel merchants they offered, unbelievable vacations, deals. Huge discounts on condos, cruises and other vacation facilities in Orlando, FL., Las Vegas, NV and other desirable locations. As I and hundreds of others consumer have found out, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't.
2. Not knowing your consumer rights.
If you do in find yourself joining one of these travel clubs or buying a vacation package you should know that you do have a right to cancel, for any reason, including, changing your mind, during a required 72 hour cooling off period under the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) guidelines.
This applies to any purchase you make in your home or at a location other than the sellers' permanent place of business that exceeds $25.00.
Some states have longer cancellation periods so knowing the consumer protection laws in your home state is an important part of any major purchase. If the salesperson offers you a cancellation option as a goodwill gesture and fails to mention that it is required, as part of the contract, you are not being told the truth and you should walk away from any deal they present to you.
3. Fail to confirm the credibility of the company.
Always ask plenty of questions when you spend your money on purchases that are not in front of you. What are the names of the hotels that you can use? Are there any restrictions, dates that are unavailable, what about pets, if that applies
