Orlando Magic
Head Coach: Stan Van Gundy
2006-2007 Record: 40-42, 3rd in the Southeast Division
Key Losses: Grant Hill, Darko Milicic, Travis Diener
Key Additions: Rashard Lewis, Adonal Foyle, Marcin Gortat
Projected Lineup:
Center: Dwight Howard
Just three years out of high school and already making All-NBA teams, Dwight Howard has a chance to become one of the greatest players of his generation. He has exceptional athletic ability and size combining to already make him a great defensive player and outstanding rebounder, finishing last season third in the league in rebounding only to Kevin Garnett and Tyson Chandler. His offensive game is unrefined as he needs to increase his variety of moves in the post; he could also use a better midrange game.
Forward: Tony Battie
Tony Battie is a steady, fundamentally sound veteran presence. While not flashy or capable of putting up strong numbers on a consistent basis, Battie is a solid role player and above average defensive player. He has a good jumpshot out to about the top of the key allowing him to contribute on offense while Howard draws seemingly constant double-teams.
Forward: Rashard Lewis
Orlando's big offseason splash, Rashard Lewis was signed to improve a very mediocre offense. An excellent athlete and great perimeter shooter, Lewis is able to score both inside and outside, although he settles for the outside shot too often. He has consistently scored 20 or more points per game efficiently for each of his last three seasons in Seattle, and will give Orlando a consistent first option on offense. Yet, he leaves much to be desired on the defensive end of the court.
Guard: J.J. Redick
Despite suffering a broken shooting hand during the summer, the Magic have stated that J.J. Redick will be ready for training camp. A player who is completely reliant on that hand, Redick's jumpshot is among the best in basketball. Redick was as close to a finished product as any player coming out of the draft is, but an early injury slowed him in his rookie year. While he was the best scorer in the nation during his college career, his skill set is more that of a Jeff Hornacek than a Ray Allen. His defense will likely never be more than average because of his small size for his position.
Guard: Jameer Nelson
A scoring point guard with, Jameer Nelson has been a leader off the court for the Magic, but struggles to be a floor general on the court. He is not a great distributor and as soon as he accepts that, he could become a good, dependable, shoot-first
