Teachers are only the emissaries of culture, they are not the progenitors. If society determined what is worthy of scholarship, more citizens would get involved in shaping the learning environment rather than relying solely on a guild of educators. Education is a life-long undertaking. It doesn't start or end with institutionalized training. Sure, it's great to have the experience of a personality that makes a subject come alive but as the old Chinese saying goes, "a good student can learn more from a bad teacher, than a bad student can learn from a good teacher." Teaching is a noble profession but if a student wants to learn, s/he will, somehow. It's not teachers that make students value education, it's the benefit of the education itself that draws them to a teacher, any teacher. Everyone is a teacher at some point in his or her life somewhere. The relationship between student and teacher, the subject matter, the purpose for learning and the community of benefit are all important ingredients in the cycle of give and take in life. Every one of us has a unique story to tell and something to teach, whether we're professional or amateur. The world would be a better place if more people were engaged in sharing what they know with others in their communities and spheres of influence. This is the responsibility of the entire community, not just those who've chosen teaching as a profession.
