Each of has a creative impulse, a spirit if you will, that drives us on. Some of us work with paint, some of us work with clay, or words or a camera or a computer; each is its own art form; equally, there is an art to making the perfect bread, an art to tuning a motorcycle to perfection, and art to designing a backing card for vibrator packaging. All these things have an art to them.
We're not talking about that sort of art though, are we?
We're talking about art as a concept, we're talking about the idea of art as something in accessible and something to be pursued by only a few; yet only a few of us came to our art with anything but a curiosity, and a feeling of joy at progress.
In high compliment, I've had friends tell me they couldn't write like I do. I say thanks. I don't tell them that I couldn't write like I do a year ago, or even a month ago. Good writing comes from practice and persistence; it takes a long time to reconcile the concept with the final product perfectly, it takes a long to to be able to do it consistently.
To access the artist within all you need is desire; you have to want to paint well, you have to want to sculpt with a vision in mind; as you hand turns at your art you are sculpting the future. It's exciting; it's exhilarating and only feeds your desire to great a better piece, to create something that communicates your concept more clearly.
Beauty in art stems from, a fascination with the mundane; the curve of a woman's neck, the dip in the flight of a bird and the shifting shape of a cloud can all inspire us to want to create art, this is inspiration. Great art comes from a great care for the mundane life and a joy in the perfect moment; art comes from seeing a sunset and wanting to be able to show someone else this thing of beauty and share with them the way it made you feel; art is a love affair with yourself, and the whole world about you.
To access art, do as an artist would; if you want to be a painter, paint. Paint daily, paint every spare moment you get. Paint nudes, still lifes, abstracts, your dreams and the cold moments of reality, but paint. The same applies to any other art, for an artist is only an artist when they are indulging in their art.
