After stumbling about the movie review section for damn near forever, I opted to place my article here.
After Dark Films has debuted a series of 8 films "To Die For". They've labeled it a "Horrorfest". As a horror buff, I took on the feat of watching all 8. While the trailers portray all 8 films as being cutting edge horror not fit for general audiences (catering to hardcore horror fans), I didn't see what the big deal was on several of the films.
Let's begin shall we?
Penny Dreadful Director: Richard Brandes
I actually enjoyed this one. Rachel Miner does a fantastic job capturing the paranoia of an amathophobic young girl. I wanted to slap her. (Trust me this is good. I believed her hysteria.)
The action occurs in a car wedged between two trees in the middle of a deserted park. The plot is a big urban myth-ish: escaped mental patient, blah-di-blah, but the sheer volume of sadistic behavior enacted on poor Penny is fascinating. This is not your garden variety psycho. She kills off everyone pretty indiscriminately, but keeps toying with Penny throughout the long hours of the night. In addition to being wacko, I suspect the hitcher might have also been British (scope the teeth, yo).
Unrest Director: Jason Todd Ipson
Based on trailers, I thought this was going to be one of the best of the bunch, but I was woefully disappointed. It is important to note that the film advertises itself as the first horror film to use actual human cadavers. Ooooh yay!
The action begins when a new semester of medical school starts. The class is split into groups and instructed to perform a dissection on a human cadaver. For some reason, Alison Blanchard, the lead, is haunted by the corpse and initiates a quest to discover the identity of her corpse. What she does discover eventually is that some archaeologist unearthed a burial tomb and angered some spirits in Argentina somewhere. Yeah, I can't even tell you with 100% accuracy because by then I was more involved with my sudoku puzzle than I was in the film. Corri English, who plays Alison Blanchard, is a cutie pie however. Think Britney before she went nutso.
The Gravedancers Director: Mike Mendez
I liked this one. Some of the special effects were a bit questionable and cheesy, but overall a good film. Plus it has Dominic Purcell in it and that gives it an automatic three stars. (So yummy.)
