O.J.'s New Legal Woes Expose Flaws in the Justice System
This needs to be heavily prefaced: I do not think O.J. Simpson is a good man. Scumbag is a lot closer to my opinion, among other words I do not feel like unearthing, all with vile connotations. I think murder is the most grievous offense we can commit and that those who take the life of another should almost without exception be thrown into a box for the rest of their own life as punishment.
When I was a child I remember seeing the Simpson Trial and all the drama that surrounded it before and during the proceedings. I saw the Bronco chase, Ito's theatrics, the racist cop, the attempt to put on the glove over splayed fingers, all of it. They showed parts of this trial in my school for godssakes!
And I thought he was innocent. To be more precise, I thought there was reasonable doubt. In my school it was actually fifty-fifty when we would talk about it. What was the reason most cited for his innocence or potential innocence? Beyond what was probably childhood optimism it articulated itself in two words: Mark Fuhrman.
He was proven to be a liar and a racist and he was the first one at the scene. What good is infallible DNA evidence when it might have been planted? He was successfully portrayed as corrupt and him "pleading the fifth" to all questions including whether or not he had planted the evidence might have been a chance to educate us children on the legal system but it seemed more like an admission of guilt to me and many others. Thus doubt was established.
It was not until just about six months ago that doubt vanished. It was Simpson himself who did it, writing a book called If I Did It, detailing how he "would have" done the killings. To be honest he did not even need the pretext. As our laws stand he could have screamed his confession on the steps outside the courthouse right after the verdict came in. Though it has less dramatic flair, what he did with that book amounted to the same thing.
I am certain he did it. The doubt is gone. No man whose wife was murdered would pretend to have been the man who did it and try and relive the most horrible experience of his life through the eyes of the killer. I have a good imagination but even I could not think up a situation where that would seem realistic, and it certainly doesn't here.
And, finally, this brings me to my point. I started out conflicted over these armed robbery charges on Simpson. It has been obvious from Point A that the legal system was throwing
