Poetry: Materialism

To set off from you know not where
to travel to a far off place without the
knowledge of how you are going to get there
and how do you know you will ever reach the end
What will you encounter along the way
with fears abound, travel sickness guaranteed
to sink or swim and life's blood to bleed
Life taken for granted, too much going on
not really noticing reality going wrong

Concentrating on all that is superficial and
missing the important things that make life real
trying to improve ones lot in life and
missing the point of foundation stones gone awry
Materialistic we all become
keeping up with the Jones's and missing all the fun
We all contrive to be better than the rest
when all said and done it is we
that create the mess
When do we see what is really going on
we don't
we deserve our arses to be filled with a bomb.

Does it matter whether the tele is new
when having a tele is all we can do?
But snobbery reigns and contrives to drive us
all to distraction where we barely survive
If we take a step back and reflect
that is only done when it is too late
and hindsight kicks in
we then know what a fool we've been
and what we missed in between
A holiday mattered, but not where
so we work all year just to bear the
expense of that trip to Disney land,
but Skegness would have done only
not so grand
We missed the point of what mattered most
and being a family together meant nowt
So we all see blindly what's there
Without seeing or caring of what we share
We are all guilty no-one to blame
too late now, what a great shame
Outside pressures of needing to conform, mattered more
than looking within and being there for them
So work we do to earn what what we should
to allow us to buy the best of what was needed
Without knowing it we did not care
but what we felt was important
was what we wanted others to see?
Wanting to fit in with those who don't know what life's about
becoming ignorant idiots instead of being free
Been there, done that, won the award
ignorant excuses written on chalk board
So here we are after all that has passed
understanding the real world regretting at last
Too late now, but feeling low, we did not spot what was on show
We missed the chance to put it right,
We could not face it so took flight
Running away did us no good, only led to us away
and having the sympathy of wood
Now we conceive what was wrong with us
too involved in crap we could not clearly see
What was wrong, too afraid to face
loosing things and too afraid to chase
