Who doesn't love a great massage? The feel of all the stress and tension escaping out of our back, neck, and shoulders. Gone are the worries of the big project at work, gone are the kids schedules for the week, gone is the fight with our spouse from last night. Suddenly we feel refreshed, calm, and collected. Yet finding a good massage therapist can be just as stressful as a rough day at work.
Imagine this scenario instead. You decide to hire a massage therapist, and because you don't know where to start, and don't have a lot of experience with massages, you decide to find a place out of the phone book. You choose an impressive looking ad that offers a special for new customers, and place your order. The therapist arrives twenty minutes late without a table, but carrying a stereo and wearing not enough clothing. Congratulations, you just accidentally hired a stripper instead of a massage therapist.
Believe it or not, that is a scenario that faces a number of people new to the world of massage therapists. In some cases you do find an actual massage therapist, but either receive a student or someone without formal training, which can cause more problems than they help. To ensure that you find a great massage therapist for your needs, follow a few helpful tips.
Try booking an appointment at a reputable day spa where you will be guaranteed a professional experience. Another option is to ask friends for recommendations. That way you will know someone who had experience with that particular massage therapist, and how the therapist treats their clients. If neither of those will work for you, consider asking for a recommendation from your personal physician or a local physical therapist. They are usually willing to offer a few names in your area of therapists who have a good reputation.
Once you find a massage therapist, ask for references from former or current clients; clients are the best source of information for someone that has never used the therapist before. Ask about the types of services offered, the massage techniques the therapist uses, and any other questions you might have about privacy. Ensure that the massage therapist has formal training and is licensed with the state. You also might want to consider checking to see if the therapist is set up as a business with the state, especially if they work in individual homes .
Using these tips, you can make easy work of finding a massage therapist to fit your needs.
