Album reviews: Appetite for Destruction, Guns 'n' Roses

More than 50,000,000 copies sold within the first few years of it's release, Appetite For Destruction is an album to write about!

Well all I can say about Appetite For Destruction, is this is an album that gave Rock N Roll a major wake up call and made history, in all it's wild splendor! The most important release by Guns N Roses, personifies the dirty, gritty, attitude laden Rock N Roll lifestyle of careless excess, and was released at a time when the music scene was really starting to get too watered down and commercialized. Guns N Roses successfully put an end to that nonsense, and the only release that I can think of which is in the same league as Appetite, and came out during the same year, although not as good of an album, is Motley Crue's Girls Girls Girls. Appetite For Destruction's nerve and attitude makes for a raw, real experience, and leaves a deep deep, proud mark.

Appetite opens with "Welcome To The Jungle". Executed off of a foundation of aggressive, chunky double guitar riffing, Welcome To The Jungle is all about hitting the L.A. scene, and quickly going from naive to tested, street smart and tough, before the "jungle" swallows you whole. Another landmark tune on the album is the very diverse and melodic "Rocket Queen", about a young girl who knows how to use what she's got to get what she wants, and survive, eventually becoming the undisputed "queen of her world".

Let's start the track listing with "It's So Easy". Definitely one of my favorite G&R songs, it has a chorus which is in complete contrast to the rest of the song, but miraculously works perfectly, in a completely natural, organic way, with the rest of the track's hard edged flow. The diverse vocal performances throughout the It's So Easy, have a very ear-opening effect, which draws you into the song and makes you feel like you're actually experiencing what the song is about.

"Night Train" is a straight forward, "no frills" rock tune, with an impressive, upfront fundamental rhythm guitar part. The song just keeps on rolling with a solid grove, and unshakable determination. Extra depth is effectively added to the track with great, intelligent bass lines, courtesy of Duff Mckagan. Toping off the song are some tasteful, carefully weighed guitar solos, rounding out this tune as a classic by Guns N Roses.

Although "Out To Get Me" falls a bit short in comparison to the rest of the album, I do like it's slightly comical, paranoid vibe. Definitely one of the simpler tracks on Appetite, it's strong,
