What is the role of viruses on planet Earth?

by jf

Any person who has taken graduate courses in marine science knows that viruses are an important part of our ecosystem. The majority of viruses are harmful. Since not much money is devoted to understanding what viruses help rather than harm humanity, the knowledge of how many viruses exist is scant.
There have been studies however where viruses have been collected in ocean waters.Apparently viruses in the sea are easier to collect and at least quantify. Also the average size of the viruses can be measured through microsieves. This practice has been done by many oceanographers over the years. The diversity of viruses and their species is usually a sign of health. Viruses of many different sizes in a broad range of numbers is deemed healthy in most marine biological surveys.
Again, the viruses we here of are usually harmful. For example, a virus recently has been deemed the causitive agent behing the die out of bee hives in the U*nited States.Formerly their colony collapses were attributed to global warming or other reasons.
Viruses have always had a surprising role or signifi9cance in the way organisms live on our earth. To completely understand them ,more funding should be given to oceanographic studies, and then research in further fields such as soil biology could begin.
