Poetry: Experiencing nature

by Sean W. Makiney

Created on: September 18, 2007

Ocean breezes, strong and whipping
Face now redden and ears cold form the chill
Positively powerful, enlightening, and refreshing to my mind.

Considering the sea, the history of man's folly to overcome the horizon's call
To challenge the destiny and fate that drives my life like the waves crashing into the surf
Pounding and churning the beach, pounding and churning my soul.

Salty brine lifting the from the sea's body aloft in the air
Stinging my nose and filling my lungs, becoming part of the sea and part of the world
An essence larger than myself, the world shifts to the request of my thoughts alone.

Desperation pulls deeper as the worlds clues begin to form in my mind
I feel the sand form shapes beneath my feet,
This place I touch so very lightly shows the impression of where I have stayed.

Is it possible to throw a stone into the sea without a ripple breaking the surface?
Within the torrent of white water and curling waves breaking to shore
The stone is gone in an instant, a message to the sea too small to be heard.

Or was it, I did not throw the stone to make a point only to edify my own curiosity.
Were to all the waves crash down on my tiny body at once would I still hold the truth
Would I still know the answers to questions that are still to wash away my ignorance?

The sun bounces from the water, shaping the waves and shining through my thoughts
Interesting how blue the water is and clear your mind becomes from such a moment
I push aside the truth, for a moment, and climb the rocky cliffs that outline the beach

From here I see the boats lifted in the waves, I raise an arm to shade my eyes
Not form the truth but to look up on it, so many before have done the same
Absolutes only revealed by exploration of our world, listening to the truths that are real.

I see the crew waving back and beckoning me to swim to them
I can only make it halfway before the sea takes me to Jones' locker
But I am not dead, I inhale the ocean brew with delight as it fills me.

Fear gone forever and living a life gliding in the world without boundaries
Flying with the hawks, swimming with the orcas, loving without designs of my past.
I just need to learn to fly and learn to swim I think to myself

My eyes slowly open and I begin to feel the warmth of the sun on my face
The smell of the sea in my head, the grit of sand beneath my body
I sit up and feel the dream play through my mind again as I smile.

There is truth in the playfulness of dreams
There is truth in the crash of the waves
There is reality in the circling of the hawk, and the breaching of the orca.
