The main reason why McDonalds is targeting the hip hop/rap community more now in advertising is because this genre of music and the community that goes along with it is currently the largest and most popular in America. They would be foolish to pass on this very popular and very spend happy demographic of people. I mean a lot of this community is about over the top style, music, and fashion so the members of it are more likely to be more rabid consumers.
Of course there is another underlying reason why McDonalds and other fast food chains appear to be targeting the hip hop community. While this isn't certainly isn't always the case, hip hop and rap music is most prominent in urban settings. Obviously in this urban setting there will be alot of potential consumers shopping in a large selection of stores and quite frankly people have to eat. Fast food has always fit itself in with a busy day of shopping only now their fitting themselves into a busy day of buying records, bling, and fresh kicks.
But what about this underlying reason? From reading this article you already know hip hop is prominent in many urban settings but sadly poverty is also prominent in many urban settings. Ever notice there are plenty of McDonalds and fast food chains in a small area of the urban setting with very few if any traditional restaurants. If people in a given area can not afford regular food shopping or regular restaurants on a regular basis then a fast food joint that sells dollar burgers and meals under 6 bucks will surely do well in a poorer area.
In other words hip hop and poverty ridden urban areas are correlated although they aren't always dependent on each other; McDonalds is merely marketing its cheap fast food in an area where there is a demand for cheap food and through hip hop marketing they can reach and relate with the most popular form of music in many urban areas.
So it isn't just about the large hip hop community or about lower income urban settings, it just happens that McDonalds realized that the hip hop community is also largely populating the urban setting. This isn't to say all hip hop fans are poor or that all poverty stricken people are hip hop fans but McDonalds is essentially banking on both of these aspects of urban areas.
