If you are going to document your Dad arm-pit fart a carol, or have proof that, yes, someone DID give you a hot pink sweater covered with jingle bells, then you might as well do it right.
Who wants to watch 3 hours of kids fighting over toys if it's going to be shaky film? Not me! I want to watch drunk relatives in QUALITY (better for future black mail that way)!
First things first, I don't care what kind of camera you have, get a tripod. Don't have the funds for one? Find a good level spot to prop that bad boy up on. This will eliminate that shakiness, plus that wild swing to the ceiling when someone sneaks up behind you and yells.
Make sure your light is complimentary. There is so many holiday lights, take advantage of them by keeping 'real' lights to a min (but not to dark), and let some of that holiday cheer shine through with soft lights of red and green.
Then, keep it natural. Set up the camera, and forget it. You'll get candid shots of your relatives after the 'new' wears off. It will be all the sweeter if you can see how they really are, not your Mother-in-law's secret American Idol obsessions.
Let it run till it's done and you'll have that holiday stress, uh, season to enjoy for months to come.
